Organic cosmetics and treatments: the facts

Healthy but not as good, too expensive, hard to find... It's a hot debate and the world of organic cosmetics remains somewhat of a mystery... So here's closer look at an increasingly popular yet confusing trend.

Organic and natural mean the same thing!

False: Organic products are manufactured using farming techniques that don't rely on synthetic chemicals. Their packaging has a certified organic stamp or logo. Natural cosmetics, as the name suggests, contain ingredients of natural origin.

Organic skincare treatments are composed of 100% organic ingredients.

False: To be classified as organic, treatments need to comprise of at least 95% ingredients of a natural origin. This is hard to meet, mainly because of their water content - water may be a natural ingredient, but it's not considered to be organic.

Organic products don't contain additives.

True: Organic skincare treatments don't contain preservatives (notably parabens), perfumes, colourings or synthetic compounds. Synthetic ingredients are replaced by natural ones including waxes and plant or essential oils.

Organic products must be vegan

False: Organic and vegan aren't the same thing - organic products won't necessarily be vegan. Organic treatments use organic ingredients, but these may be of animal origin - propolis and royal jelly are two good examples. Vegan products, however, don't contain any products derived from animals - milk, beeswax, honey etc.

Organic treatments can still irritate skin

True: Organic products can cause flare-ups and reactions, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Some essential oils can cause allergies, with cypress, lemon and black pepper oils topping the list. That said, organic products will only contain minimal amounts of essential oils.

Organic treatments don't work as well

False: Organic products work just as well as their 'classic' counterparts. Nowadays, more than 900 certified organic ingredients are found on the organic skincare market. These organic treatments are put through the mill by the same laboratories that also test petrochemical products.

Organic treatments are more expensive!

False: It all depends on the brand! You'll find both rock bottom and sky high prices. As with classic cosmetics, there are treatments to suit all budgets.

Organic products have a shorter shelf life

False: Organic products' shelf life is tested in the same way as classic ones and nowadays they contain natural preservatives that can greatly extend their use by date.
