5 top tips for covering greys at home like a pro

As we grow older, the pigment in our hair begins to reduce due to the lack of melanin production in the hair follicles, causing the hair to grow un-pigmented i.e. grey and white. Going grey looks different to everyone because of our natural genetic make-up; for some it’s caused by stress, it may be hereditary or a diet lacking in Vitamin B.

With a rising popularity of women embracing their natural greys, women are heading to the salons asking for statement silver locks - so much so that we named Silver the Hair Colour of the Year in 2019. However despite its rising popularity, not everyone feels comfortable taking the leap into showing off their salt and pepper strands and opt for alternative coverage.

If you find yourself sitting firmly in the ‘cover them up’ grouping, then read on for our top tips on navigating colouring your greys at home.

*Always perform a patch test 48 hours before dyeing your hair.

5 top tips for covering greys at home like a pro

When choosing your shade, we recommend going for a colour that’s slightly darker for your roots and slightly lighter that matches your natural colour for the rest of your hair. This is due in part to the colour of the root being lighter already than the currently dyed lengths, applying the same colour all over will produce uneven coverage. The L’Oréal Excellence Crème is enriched with a Pro-Keratin formula that ensures up to 100% grey coverage, leaving hair feeling stronger and nourished. Follow our Triple Care Colour Regime below:

  1. CARE FOR YOUR COLOUR – includes protective colouring cream with Pro-Keratin and serum actives inside, it helps protect the hair as it colours.
  2. CARE FOR YOUR SCALP – includes caring gentle pH shampoo that delicately cleanses the scalp and hair of excess residue.
  3. CARE FOR YOUR HAIR – includes lightweight nourishing mask infused with Ceramides that intensely nourishes the hair without weighing it down.

Go darker on the roots

As with make-up, it’s always best to go in with little to start with and continue to add more as you go along to avoid the colour looking too heavy. Start with thin layers and build up to your desired coverage.

Layer the product

It might seem obvious, but a dimly-lit room is not the place to be undertaking a dye-job at home. Crack open the curtains, turn up all the lights and bring as much brightness into the room as you can - hair colour can look starkly different in artificial light than it does in natural light, so it’s important to review your hair in both whilst dyeing at home.

Turn on the lights

Unfortunately grey hair is naturally more brittle and wiry in texture, due to a reduction in the amount of sebum that the hair produces. In order to reinvigorate the hair, it’s important to follow up regularly with a conditioning treatment that nourishes and brings life back into those locks. In the L’Oréal Excellence Crème, you’ll find a lightweight mask for application post-dye to intensely enrich hair without weighing it down.

Magic Retouch matches perfectly with hair colour, even salon colour, for a natural looking finish. It is simple and quick to use, especially when in a rush or having a last minute grey hair emergency.
